  • She will take a leave of absence.

  • How did they meet? (= first meeting)

    • Maybe they met through friends at a party.

    • We learned that for the first time when we had lunch. (NOT we understood …)

  • At my gym we do exercise with virtual instructors on a screen.

    • They will renovate the small exercise room. (NOT they will demolish …)

  • I saw a special exhibition. (NOT I watched …)

    • See (verb) is used when we look at something

    • Watch (verb) is used when something is moving, like a movie, a play etc

  • My nephew had a (little / small) piano recital on Sunday.

    • Did he have stage fright?

  • The video camera’s battery ran out. It turned off.

    • We ran out of orange juice.

    • The printer will run out of ink soon, we need to buy more.

  • My teacher doesn’t force students to do a recital.

    • My teacher doesn’t care if students do a recital or not.

A: What gym to do you go?
B: I go to Hyper Fitness.
A: I used to go to that gym.
B: How long ago?
A: A long time ago. I did dance.
B: They are cancelling the hula lesson.
C: I am glad I quit!

Making Questions: there are two types of questions; SUBJECT and OBJECT questions

Example sentence: Silvia saw Paul. (Silvia = subject, See = verb, Paul = object)

Subject Question

  • Somebody saw Paul.
    WHO saw Paul?
    SILVIA saw Paul.

  • Who lives in this house? (NOT Who does lives?)
    Somebody lives in it.

  • What happened? (NOT What did happen?)
    Something happened.

Object Question

  • Silvia saw somebody.
    WHO DID Silvia see?
    Silvia saw Paul.

  • Who did you meet yesterday?
    You met somebody.

  • What did Paul say?
    Paul said something.
