Words & Phrases

  • Dental floss (noun); A thin string used to clean between teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach.

    • She uses dental floss every night after brushing.

    • It’s important to use dental floss to prevent gum disease.

    • He bought mint-flavoured dental floss.

  • Dental pick (noun); A small tool with a pointed or curved tip used to remove plaque or food stuck between teeth.

    • The dentist used a dental pick to clean between my teeth.

    • Some people prefer dental picks instead of floss.

    • Be gentle when using a dental pick to avoid hurting your gums.

  • Floss (verb); To clean between your teeth using dental floss.

    • I floss my teeth every night before bed.

    • The dentist showed me how to floss properly.

    • You should floss once a day to keep your gums healthy.

  • Nowadays, it’s common to see many children wearing braces.

    • After having braces you often need to wear a retainer.

  • Nasty (adj); Describes something that is unpleasant, disgusting, or mean in nature.

    • The food had a nasty smell.

    • He made a nasty comment about her appearance.

    • She was in a nasty mood after the argument.

1. Bear

  • Meaning: To tolerate or endure something difficult or unpleasant.

  • Synonyms: Endure, tolerate, put up with

    • “I can’t bear the cold weather.”

2. Stand

  • Meaning: To tolerate something that is annoying or unpleasant.

  • Synonyms: Endure, tolerate, put up with

    • “I can’t stand the noise outside.”

3. Handle

  • Meaning: To manage or deal with something, especially something difficult.

  • Synonyms: Manage, cope with, deal with

    • “She knows how to handle difficult customers.”

Appropriate Language

  • Nursing home – A place where elderly people live and receive medical care.

  • Retirement home – A residence for older adults who are mostly independent but want to live in a community.

  • Assisted living facility – For seniors who need help with daily activities (like dressing or bathing), but not full-time medical care.

  • Senior home – A general, casual term for housing for elderly people.

  • Elder care facility – More formal, often used in official or health care contexts.

Informal/Casual:

  • Old folks’ home – Very informal, can sound a bit dated or insensitive depending on the tone.

  • Home for the elderly – A clear and respectful option.
