Grammar

This vs Last

  • This time, I tried the pasta special.

    • This refers to the most recent visit.

  • Last time, I ordered the steak.

    • This refers to the visit before the most recent one.

Cake vs Cakes

  • I bought some cake.

    • This usually means you bought a piece or a portion of cake

  • I bought some cakes.

    • This means you bought several individual cakes.

Short Dialogues

A: I’m going to Hokkaido early next month.
B: How long are you staying?
A: It’s a short three-day trip
B: Are you staying in Sapporo?
A: Yes, but we will also have an overnight stay in Hakodate.
B: Will you visit Otaru?
A: I plan to do a day trip there.

  • an overnight stay / stay overnight; staying one night at a different location

    • “… we will also stay overnight in Hakodate.”

  • a day trip; a trip where you leave in the morning, spend the day somewhere, and return the same day
