Words & Phrases

  • Her condition is improving but not perfect.

    • She’s getting better, but still not fully recovered.

  • In adults, the symptoms of shingles often include a painful rash, itching, and flu-like symptoms.

  • She said they were going to have a funeral for immediate family only.

    • We sent her condolence money. (= money sent as a gesture of sympathy or support, often during a time of loss)

    • We sent her our condolences. (= expressing sympathy or sorrow)

  • We met thirty-three years ago when our sons were in the high school brass band.

  • The temperature was warmer than the weather forecast said.

  • Kamakura is closer than I thought. It only took one hour. The Odakyu rapid train is convenient.

  • I went to that restaurant with my husband. We had visited a painting exhibition before that.

  • The leaves haven’t turned colour yet.

    • The trees are changing colour now.

    • The autumn colours have (faded / gone / past).

Negative Responses (if comfortable sharing):

  • “I’ve been better.”

  • "Not so great, to be honest.”

  • "It’s been a tough day.”

  • "I’m feeling a bit under the weather.”

  • "Could use some improvement."

Casual or Informal Responses:
