Lesson Notes May 16, 2023 (TUESDAY ZOOM)

  • We made a reservation, but we got bumped be a larger party that came after us.

    • Bumped; someone or something is moved or pushed out of their place or position by another person or group.

  • Shojin Cuisine is a specific style of vegetarian or vegan cooking originating from Japanese Buddhist monks.

  • Manuscript; a book, document, or piece of music written by hand rather than typed or printed

    • At the exhibit there was a famous writers manuscript.

    • When my friend tries to write a new book, she always makes a manuscript draft. She doesn't like typing it out.

  • The assassinator (hid / was hidden) behind a Ginko tree.

    • The Ginko tree was knocked (over / down) by a strong storm. Now, a (new / young) Ginko tree is growing (in its place).

  • There are signs around the city saying “Do not feed the squirrels”.

    • Squirrel; ( skwir-uhl ) or ( skwur-uhl )

  • The squirrels in the park are a nuisance.

    • Nuisance (noun); investigate the opinions or experience of (a group of people) by asking them questions; also irritation, bother, problem 

  • Riding the Enoden train gives me a feeling of traveling.

  • Census; an official count, especially of a population

    • Every few years there is a nationwide census to count the population.

    • The city will be conducting a traffic survey over the weekend.

  • Survey; investigate the opinions or experience of (a group of people) by asking them questions

  • Stray (cat / dog); (of a domestic animal) having no home or having wandered away from home

    • (Indoor / outdoor) (cat / dog); a pet that spends the majority of its time inside or outside.

  • When I find animal droppings in my garden, I make my husband get rid of them.

  • Endangered; (of a species) seriously at risk of extinction

  • Extinct; (of a species, family, or other group of animals or plants) having no living members; no longer in existence
