Words & Phrases

  • I wanted to say thanks for the information she gave us.

  • I went out to look at my garden. It was so cold. I couldn’t endure to stay outside.

  • I am worried about colder temperatures than they are now.

    • “I am worried about temperatures being colder than they are now.”

  • The group draws names to see who can join the chorus.

    • If my name isn’t drawn I can’t join the chorus.

    • Has your name never been drawn?

    • She can participate if her name is drawn.

    • Last year, there was no drawing.

  • Are you turning your heater up or down?

    • I was turning it down.

  • People who wear glasses, usually have two or three pairs.

    • How many pairs of glasses do you have?

  • Eyeglasses are the same as a pair of glasses.

  • He has a knack for numbers.

    • “Knack for (phrase) mean to have a natural talent or ability to do something well, especially something that comes easily or with little effort.

    • My friend has a knack for learning languages.

    • “She has a knack for solving difficult problems.”

    • “He has a real knack for making people laugh.”

  • Excuse me, does this sweater come in blue?

    • Excuse me, is this sweater available in blue?

    • Shirts come in different sizes, like small, medium, and large.

    • These shoes are coming in more colours next month.

    • The new phone came in three models last year.

    • The store will have new dresses coming in soon.

  • I don’t want to go to karaoke. I can’t sing well, so I am embarrassed. (NOT “embarrassing)

Appropriate Language

  • “Draw” refers to the process of selecting something randomly, often by chance.

  • “Come in” is commonly used to talk about the different types, varieties, or options available for a particular thing.

  • “Embarrassed” is how you feel when something makes you feel uncomfortable or self-conscious.

    • Embarrassed is a feeling you have.

  • “Embarrassing” describes something that causes you to feel embarrassed.

    • Embarrassing describes the situation or action that causes that feeling.
