Words & Phrases

  • I took a walk before coming here, it was so warm I needed to take my jacket off and pull up my sleeves.

  • I’ve been living at a condo temporarily while my house is being built.

    • How did you find that place?

  • They used heavy machinery to (destroy / demolish) the homes.

    • ‘Demolish’; To completely tear down or break something, often in a planned or controlled way.

      • They plan to demolish the old building and build a new one.

      • The storm was so strong that it almost demolished the bridge.

    • ‘Destroy’; To completely ruin or make something unusable, often in a more general or violent way.

      • The fire destroyed the entire house.

      • Too much rain can destroy the crops.

  • I was moved by the scenes of the movie. (NOT I moved)

    • The scenes in the movie were moving.

  • Do you know what is happening with the peace negotiations between the Ukraine and Russia?

  • Do you still have any symptoms from shingles?

    • Yes, it’s still itchy and pailful.

  • I was told not to scratch my face.

    • I am not allowed to scratch my face.

  • One side effect of the medicine is it makes you drowsy.

    • ‘Drowsy’; (adj) Feeling very sleepy or lacking energy

      • She felt drowsy after taking her medicine.

      • The warm afternoon sun made him feel drowsy.

      • Driving while drowsy can be very dangerous.

  • Part of the station had no power, so the shops were closed all weekend.

    • Do you know the cause of the electrical problem?

    • The shops reopened Tuesday morning.

  • Once a crow attacked the back of my head for some reason.

    • The crow flew high then swooped down to attack.

  • I saw a murder of crows circling overhead all afternoon. (= poetic term for a group of crows)

    • A pack of (wolves / dogs / hyenas) (= predatory animals)

    • A flock of (sheep / goats / herd animals / birds)

  • This morning I heard a bush-warbler singing.

    • Some small birds were chirping while they ate from the bird-feeder.

  • The koi in my pond are active now that it’s warming up.

    • They are dormant in winter.

  • There was a train accident. Later in the day, the train services resumed. (“Recovered” isn’t typically used for train services)
