Words & Phrases

  • I need to wear a brace on my ankle for the next while. (NOT supporter)

  • I visited an orthopaedist to treat my ankle.

    • My orthopaedist recommended physical therapy for my shoulder injury.

  • During the earthquake, my cats were running around (frantically / madly).

  • Hurricanes form in the Atlantic Ocean. (NOT born)

  • One of the wildfires might have been started by a controlled burn.

    • The suspect lost control of the fire.

  • He lost his family in the disaster. (= he lost all members of his family)

    • He lost a family member in the disaster. (= he lost just one person from his family)

  • He was conscripted into the military, and was stationed in Southeast Asia.

Appropriate Language

  • “Brace”; a device that supports or strengthens something; also means to prepare for something difficult or to reinforce

    • He wore a knee brace to support his injured leg. (noun: a device for support)

    • She took a deep breath to brace herself before giving the speech. (verb: to prepare for something difficult)

    • The workers used beams to brace the old wall and prevent it from falling. (verb: to strengthen or support)

  • “Retaliate”; to react to an action, usually by fighting back or responding in the same way

    • He decided not to retaliate after his friend insulted him.

    • The team retaliated by scoring a goal right after their opponents did.

    • She retaliated with a clever comeback when someone was rude to her.
