Words & Phrases

  • We have to do an octangular dance movement.

  • I worked my last regular shift at the wine bar, I worked until midnight.

    • The counter was full, and we ran out of wine glasses.

  • I had to buy a new desktop because my laptop stopped working.

  • My son’s phone needed to be repaired. The repair fee was ¥70,000. (= seventy-thousand yen)

    • I also want a new iPhone.

    • The new iPhone camera can take astrophotography shots.

  • Would you ever go solo camping?

    • I learned how to set up a tent, make a fire and cook over a campfire.

    • I went camping as an activity in high school.

  • I used a cot when I went camping, I don’t like sleeping on the ground.

    • At the hotel, we called the front desk to bring up a cot. (= a small, easily portable bed)

  • My son brought me a little something from Odakyu OX. (= a gift, souvenir)

    • I’ll pick you up a little something when I go to the store later today.

  • I think this ice cream bar has gotten smaller! These used to be larger.

    • This is a good example of shrinkflation!

Appropriate Language

  • “Run out of (something)” means to use up all of something, so that that none is left.

    • We ran out of milk, so I need to buy more. (= no milk left)

    • My phone ran out of battery. (= the battery is dead)

    • They ran out of tickets for the concert. (= no more tickets available)

  • “Astrophotography” is taking pictures of the night sky, including stars, the Moon, and planets.
