  • Pier; a platform on pillars going from the shore into the sea, typically with entertainment arcades and places to eat

    • Did you visit the Santa Monica pier?

  • Pier; a structure from the shore into a river, lake, or the sea, used as a landing area for boats

    • Osanbashi is popular pier in Yokohama where some ships dock.

  • My back hurt after picking up my grandson, I took some pain killers, and the next day the pain was gone.

Compare these two sentences

  • I had fun. (NOT I had a fun)

    • I had a fun time.

  • It was fun. (NOT It was a fun)

    • It was a fun time

  • Longevity; (mass noun) long life

    • We eat special soba noodles at New Year’s for our longevity.

  • Inarizushi; sushi rice wrapped in friend tofu; these looks like small tofu pillows

  • Countryside; a rural area, rather than a town

  • Suburban; an outlying area of a city, especially a residential one

    • Residential; an area with houses, apartments, condominiums etc

  • Beginner’s luck; good luck supposedly experienced by a beginner at a particular activity

    • Winning a large amount of money the first time you play slot machines is simply beginner’s luck.
