  • If you’re in a hurry, do you walk on the escalator?

    • Do you run or walk on the steps?

  • To print the document, follow the prompts on your screen.

  • When my kids were young, I scattered beans for setsubun. Nowadays I don’t bother.

    • My grandkids are in middle school, they are too old for setsubun.

  • I visited a park not too far from my home to see the wax plums in bloom.

    • Waxberries are blooming now.

    • Is it an easy tree to grow? (NOT grow up)

  • Did you leave a tip in the room every day? (Noun)

    • Did you tip the waiter? (Verb)

    • How much should I tip the (waiter / guide / cleaning staff etc)? (Verb)

    • There is no tipping system, so don’t worry about it.

  • Do you know what the sales tax is in (Canada / Singapore / France etc)?

  • The city had (a lot of different people / a diverse population / different ethnicities). (Using “race” can be problematic, so it’s better to use a different phrase)

Vocabulary

  • Prompts; instructions or messages that appear on the screen, guiding you on what to do next

  • 蝋梅; has a couple of common names in English; wax plum, waxberry, wintersweet

  • Grow up; to become an adult; we typically do not use for plants, trees, vegetables etc

  • Fragrance; a smell, especially a pleasant, sweet smell

  • Tip; (verb) to give a small amount of money as a reward for a service

    • (Noun) a small amount of money given as a reward
