Lesson Notes February 13, 2024 (Vocabulary Building)

  • My car navigation took me to an interesting place. I wasn’t expecting it!

  • The department store staff was a senior who couldn’t use a smartphone so well.

  • When I was younger, I worked for a short time at a temple.

    • The room only had paper sliding doors.

    • I lodged at a temple for a couple of days in the summer.

  • How many people were in the audience?

    • How big was the audience?

  • The watch band changes colour to match each song.

Vocabulary

  • Senior; (noun) an elderly person, especially one who receives a pension

  • Lodge; (verb) rent a room, or stay at a place

  • Audience; (noun) all spectators or listeners at a play, film, concert, meeting

People’s Appearance

Section 2

Qualifying phrases show which person or thing you are referring to; they should readily identify the person or thing. These phrases make it easier for us to understand who or what is being discussed.

  • The girl on the left has dark blonde hair.

  • The man in the centre looks rather overweight.

  • The man wearing the orange shirt … (Use a qualifying phrase that is easily distinguishable; if all the men have short dark hair, saying  “The man with short dark hair” would not be a great qualifying phrase)

    • The man on the middle right …

  • She has got a lot of freckles.

    • Her face is spotty.

    • Her face is covered in spots.

    • She has red blotches on her face.

  • How would you describe the man’s hair on the bottom right?

    • He has short dark spiky hair.
