Lesson Notes April 4, 2023 (TUESDAY ZOOM)

  • Salisbury steak (NOT hamburg steak); made from a blend of ground beef and other ingredients and usually served with gravy or brown sauce

NOTE: When we discuss medical information we may use different vocabulary depending the context of the conversation and the level of familiarity with the person you are talking to

    • Close friend or family member who is aware of your medical history and condition, we are more likely to use medical words

    • In most casual conversations, people may use more common and less technical terms to describe medical procedures

  • How many times have you had …?

  • Have you ever had …?

    • (the flu / a cold / a blood test / an endoscopy / a check-up / etc)

  • Every year the city government sends a letter to get your blood tested and sometimes to get your stomach checked.

  • You sounded fashionable when you were younger.

  • Stiletto heel; a type of high-heel with a thin, pointed heel often 10 centimetres or higher

  • There are many different types of shoes

    • Athletic shoes, boots, sandals, flats, high hells, loafers, oxfords, pumps, sneakers etc

  • Pedestrian (bridge / crossing / road)

  • Nationality words; typically you do not need to use the article “a” for the majority of nationalities or ethnicities

    • Is she Japanese? (NOT a Japanese)

    • My friend is Spanish. (NOT a Spanish)

    • He is Canadian and his wife is American.

    • In some cases, it may be appropriate to use the article "a" before a nationality word to provide clarity or emphasis
